Billionaire Investor George Soros has been known for years for being a leading funder of Democratic politics. For years Soros has given generously to political causes but he had scaled back quite a bit in recent years. The 2016 election is the first time Soros has been noted as giving large amounts of money since his incredible gift of 27 million dollars to the Bush campaign back in 2004. Soros has donated or committed more than $25 million to help Hillary Clinton and other Democratic candidates during this most recent election, according to Federal Election Commission records on biography.com.
An 85 year old native New Yorker, has had a friendship with Clinton for nearly two and a half decades. This friendship has allowed Soros to be more involved and engaged in the political process than he has in years. Furthermore his fear of Donald Trump, who he describes as ‘doing the work of ISIS’ on Time.com, further helped to motivate Soros to get involved in this past election. Michael Vachon, Soros’s advisor, described his boss as a consistent donor who was more involved than normal. This was already set up to be a big election because of the hostility on the other side toward many of the issues George cares most about at. http://www.nytimes.com/topic/person/george-soros. With Trump in the mix, the stakes are exceptionally high to Soros.
Through June of last year, George Soros had given more than $7 million to a super PAC supporting Clinton called Priorities USA Action. Records also Soros gave as much as $2 million to American Bridge 21st Century, a group opposed to trump and other republicans.
Although George Soros’s donations have been smaller in recent years, he is a well known supporter of the Democratic cause. He has supported Barack Obama throughout both of his terms in the White House. It should be safe to assume we will hear more from Soros in the 2020 election.
