Lacey and Larkin condemn Trump for pardoning Joe Arpaio

Joe Arpaio is the former sheriff of Maricopa County who was pardoned by President Trump in a presidential pardon that was very controversial. The reason for the pardon to the sheriff despite being found guilty in court cases is still something that amazes many people, especially in his county.

It wrong for the president to start his term in office by pardoning one of the most notorious sheriffs in the history of the country.

The move taken by Trump was seen as an attempt to tell the world that illegal immigrants would not be tolerated. However, even if this was the message, it still beats logic why he would support a man who is behind numerous cases of human rights violations.

Trump demonstrated that he does not support human rights for all people. The human rights charter is supposed to be a universal documented that is protected by all nations. It does not go well for people to live in a world where their rights can be ignored at any time. The rule of law deserves to be observed by all people, including presidents.

The presidential pardon given to Arpaio marked a sad day in the history of human rights activism. It is not proper to allow a man who has committed crimes that affected hundreds of people just to walk freely like never did anything wrong. The president deserved to show some degree of respect to the law.

The pardon of Arpaio however, did not come as a surprise to many people in the country. Trump and Arpaio have been cronies for a long time. They have assisted each other at particular times. Before Trump was elected, president, one of the cases that brought the two together was the birther movement started by Donald Trump while Obama was the president.

Arpaio was one of the key supporters of the movement that wanted Obama to prove that he was indeed born in America. Since then, the two worked closely. During the presidential campaigns, Joe Arpaio was a vocal supporter of Donald Trump. Even after losing his seat, Joe Arpaio was not worried; Donald Trump had won the presidency. This was the good news that he wanted.

He had been found guilty of committing crimes against the people and was to be sentenced to a jail term not less than 12 months. President Trump used the powers which have been placed on his office by the constitution of the republic to offer a pardon to Joe Arpaio.

Just like that, Joe Arpaio had secured freedom. He is now a free man despite the crimes he committed against the immigrants and journalist Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. The two were behind media publications concerning the crimes he committed.
