Ivy holds a master degree in architecture from Tulane University alongside Bachelor of Arts from Sewanee University. He has always been hailed for his ability to communicate the value of design through his work. Today, he is a celebrated figure in the community and a mentor to many.
Ivy started his career immediately after graduating from the university. In 1996, he was appointed to be the editor in chief of Architectural Record. This is after he proved to be an individual who is responsible and focused enough to head an organization. The organization which is now one of the worlds most subscribed architectural journal has tremendously grown since Robert Ivy joined. The organization publishes some of the remarkable work from renowned architectures. The organization has also been awarded several honors including the magazine journalism award and National magazine award.
Before joining architectural record, Robert Ivy was a principal at Dean and Ivy and a critic for many national publications from 1981 to 1996. He was also a juror on the panel that selected Frank Gehry to design the National Dwight. He has a record of good leadership qualities that have seen him work with different organizations including becoming a VP and Editorial Director of McGraw-Hill Construction Media and also as a senior at Design Futures Council. Some of the awards that Ivy has received include the Crain Award. Crain Award is one of the prestigious awards that are given by American Business Media community; it is one of the highest recognition that can be awarded to an individual.
Today, Robert Ivy is the Executive Vice President and CEO of the American Institute of Architects. He has been the CEO since 2011. He shares great designs with the famous architects Dr. Nathan Clifford Ringer who was the first to graduate from the American School of architecture. He has also collaborated with icons such as John Wellborn, Richard Buckminster, Saarinen and Ludwig Mies. Ivy is among the seven individuals to be awarded in the fraternity’s 100 years history, and he is also the first architect to be selected in the 21st century.
