Thanks To Betsy DeVos Thousands Of Young Students Can Receive A Quality Education

It has recently been revealed that Betsy DeVos has been donating large sums of money, over the years, to help improve the educational system of her nation. During the lead up to her nomination as the Secretary of Education for the United States, her finances and contributions to many different causes were placed under a microscope. While many in the nation were surprised to hear about how much she has donated to different charitable causes, the people of Michigan were not. Her husband, Dick DeVos, and herself started up the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation in order to fund different causes and charitable organizations.

After digging into her finances, it was discovered that her husband and herself had donated more than $3 million to educational causes in 2015, alone. That made up 26% of the combined charitable giving efforts of the foundation for the year. It was also discovered that she had donated more than $350,000 to groups who focus on reforming the educational system of the United States. When asked about these sizable donations, she responded that many American families do not have access to the American dream and that she intends to change that.

While many of her critics maintain that the kinds of laws she wants see passed will funnel money away from traditional public schools, she has responded to them by pointing out the horrific state of many of these kinds of schools. Some of the recipients of her donations include the Detroit Charter School Company New Urban Learning, Compass College of Cinematic Arts in Grand Rapids, Potter’s House in Wyoming, Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Northwood University in Midland, West Michigan Aviation Academy, and many more. While many people percieve Mrs. DeVos as a rich woman who is out of touch with the educational needs of the country, many others believe she is exactly the kind of person who can help.

There is a common misperception that the laws she is working to get passed will go to help the wealthy. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The legislation she has been supporting has already helped to pay the tuition of many children who come from poor families. If it wasn’t for laws that allowed them to gain access to public funds, their kids would be forced to attend a school based on the zip code of where their home is located. Her donations to Potter’s House Christian school allowed many kids to attend the school who would of otherwise had no other option than public schools.

Betsy DeVos’s hard work has been a large part of the reason why there are roughly a quarter million children who are in private-choice programs that help to pay their tuition to private and charter schools. In 2012, thousands of students were able to enter into educational choice programs, and Latinos benefited greatly from these programs. In the past, educational choice was seen as radical, but today it is becoming more accepted as more and more positive results continue to pour in.
